Environmental Pledges:  Writing Letters to Local Businesses
by Robyn Siegelman, Kim Rosner and Jim Williams
third grade teachers
Nassakeag Elementary School ~ Setauket, New York

Our kids learned a lot about helping to improve the environment by working with the community through a special letter writing effort.

The kids wrote to community businesses (you can get a list with addresses from your local Chamber of Commerce) asking them to make a specific commitment to improving their business'  environmental practice.

We worked out an arrangement with our local newspaper to publish the names of the businesses that made an eco-commitment.

We had a fantastic response from the businesses, many of which sent detailed and motivating letters back to the kids.

The following is the text used in a letter that  was attached to personalized letters written by students to businesses in our community.  (It pretty much explains the entire activity.)  To create a similar letter - open a document  using your word processing software. Then copy, paste and appropriately edit this text to accommodate your class, school and community.

Dear Community Member,

Attached you will find a letter from students in our third grade classes at Nassakeag Elementary School.  We are working on projects for Earth Day and our students are asking for your support.  Our students have made individual pledges to help save the earth, and they now hope that the Three Village business community will join them in this effort.

The Three Village Herald had graciously offered to publish the names of those businesses that choose to participate, along with their pledge.  This information will be published in their April 19th edition. As you will see, our students have made some suggestions for pledges.   Please feel free to use their suggestions or come up with one of your own.  If your business does something unique to protect our environment, please feel free to note that below.  In addition, we encourage you to take a new pledge at this time.

If you are interested in participating, please return the form below - no later than APRIL 6th to the following address:

Earth Day Project
c/o Nassakeag Elementary School
490 Pond Path
East Setauket, NY 11733

Thank you in advance for supporting your younger community members.  The example you set today makes a lasting impression on tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Robyn Siegleman
Kim Rosner
Jim Williams
