Pledges: Writing Letters to Local Businesses Our kids learned a lot about helping to improve the environment by working with the community through a special letter writing effort. The kids wrote to community businesses (you can get a list with addresses from your local Chamber of Commerce) asking them to make a specific commitment to improving their business' environmental practice. We worked out an arrangement with our local newspaper to publish the names of the businesses that made an eco-commitment. We had a fantastic response from the businesses, many of which sent detailed and motivating letters back to the kids. The following is the text used in a letter that was attached to personalized letters written by students to businesses in our community. (It pretty much explains the entire activity.) To create a similar letter - open a document using your word processing software. Then copy, paste and appropriately edit this text to accommodate your class, school and community.
